How Labyrinth Walking Works
What is a labyrinth walk?
A labyrinth is used for walking meditation. For each session, the facilitator creates the labyrinth indoors from natural materials, shaping a single winding path that leads from the outer edge to the center and back again.

Labyrinths are used worldwide as a way to quiet the mind, calm anxieties, restore a sense of balance, enhance creativity, and encourage meditation, insight, self-reflection and stress reduction. The practice combines gentle physical movement with focused attention and reflection.
A labyrinth is not a maze
There are no tricks, choices or dead ends. A labyrinth is unicursal: you follow the same path on the way in and on the way out.

The whole path is visible, so there is no need to worry about getting lost. Instead, as you walk, you can allow your attention to turn inward and notice your thoughts without the distraction of choosing a route.
How to walk the labyrinth
There is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. Move in the way that feels natural to you, while being respectful of others who are walking.

Allow your body to set the pace. Try to clear your mind and remain open to whatever thoughts and feelings arise.

Children often enjoy walking the labyrinth, and participants aged 12 and over are welcome to join. If a young participant needs help staying calm or focused during the practice, we ask the accompanying adult to provide that support so that everyone can experience the meditative quality of the walk.
Before you begin
You may want to sit quietly for a few moments and reflect before starting. Some people begin their walk with a question in mind, while others simply want some time away from an overly connected and busy world.

There is no need to arrive with a particular intention. Give yourself time to settle and enter the walk at your own pace.
The walk to the center — and back
As you move towards the center, take time to quiet your mind and release your troubles. Notice your breathing, relax and continue at the pace that feels right for you.

The center is a place for reflection. You can pause there and stay for as long as you like. When you are ready, begin walking out along the same path you followed in.

As you leave the labyrinth, take time to notice whatever sense of calm, clarity or well-being the experience may bring.
Every experience is different
No two labyrinth walks are the same. You may feel very little, or unexpected emotions and memories may surface.

Whatever happens, listen to your body and give yourself the time you need. If something that comes up during the walk feels excessively troubling, consider following the experience with counselling.
