At Singapore Math Methods, Activities & Learning (SMMALz), our workshops offer children an interactive, hands-on experience of mathematics — far beyond traditional teaching. Founded in 2023 and based on over 15 years of international teaching experience, SMMALz designs small-group sessions that help students build strong mathematical foundations, develop problem-solving strategies, and gain true confidence through meaningful learning.

We offer two interconnected workshops:
1. Bar Models Workshop — visual problem-solving through Singapore Math’s signature bar model technique
2. Skills & Fact Fluency Workshop — mastering number sense, operations, and essential fluency for deeper understanding

The author of the course
All workshops are led by Zoe Z., the founder of SMMALz.

Zoe is an experienced educator with a background in early, upper primary, and middle school teaching, curriculum design, and coordination across international programmes, including the Cambridge International Curriculum.

Her teaching combines structured skill-building with creative, inquiry-based learning, inspiring students to see mathematics as a language of logic and imagination.
  • Strengthening mathematical foundations and gaining confidence,
  • Solving problems and exploring new strategies,
  • Stretching your thinking with more advanced, multi-step challenges.
Each session is interactive and student-centred, combining:
  • Hands-on learning with cubes, dice, number cards, and visual tools,
  • Collaborative problem-solving using bar models and real-life word problems,
  • Guided discussion to make thinking visible and deepen understanding,
  • Differentiated materials tailored to each group’s needs and progress.

Students learn to represent ideas concretely, then visually, and finally symbolically — building genuine mastery step by step.
Boost your skills
How are we going to work?
  • Conceptual understanding through the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach.
  • Visual and logical reasoning through bar models and structured problem solving.
  • Fact fluency and number sense — mastering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
  • Confidence to work independently and collaboratively on open-ended problems.
  • Flexible mathematical thinking that supports success in all areas of learning.
What will we study?
These workshops are designed for children aged 7–12.
Each group is formed by age and ability, ensuring the right balance of support and challenge. Whether your child needs to build fluency, consolidate understanding, or go beyond it, the workshops encourage a positive, growth-oriented mindset in mathematics.

Bar Models Workshop
Content
Bar Models Workshop is a visual and conceptual journey into problem solving.
Students learn to use bar models — rectangular diagrams representing quantities and relationships — to make sense of complex word problems.

Understanding
  1. The 4-step problem-solving process
  2. What types of Bar Models there are
Solving word problems involving:
  1. Addition and subtraction
  2. Multiplication and division
Fractions
  1. Word problems involving part-whole models
  2. Word problems involving comparison models
Ratio
Word problems involving comparison models

Percentages
Word problems involving part-whole models

Students discover how to visualise relationships between numbers, identify what’s known and unknown, and select operations confidently.
